Nada Surf

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Biogaphy:

Nada Surf is an American band from New York playing rock-punk-pop music. The three band-members are Daniel Lorca on bass, Matthew Caws playing the guitar and Ira Elliot, the drummer.
Background:

Nada Surf was formed in 1994. At that time Nada surf consisted of 4 members. This didn’t really work out very well because the singer quit, and soon thereafter drummer left Nada surf too. Matthew Caws and Daniel Lorca were now alone in the band. They desperately needed a drummer. In 1995 Matthew and Daniel convinced Ira Elliott – a friend since 1984 – to join the band. Matthew and Daniel started doing the vocals instead of finding a new singer. The band as we know it today was complete. Daniel and Matthew, long-time friends since grade school, got the idea of starting a band early. In their teens they both played together in the band “The cost of Living”.

Years later they played together again in another band. After that Daniel went to Europe, where after some time settled in Spain, where he played the band “Angelo la quais”. Ira played in the band “the Fuzztones” for many years. In 1995 they worked on some new material – as well as some old before the split-up – and the result was a demo tape, called TAFKANS. They played at various clubs in New York, where they lived.

The breakthrough

One day they met Ric Ocasek, a famous producer, at a club in NY. They slipped him a demo-tape, and to their surprise, they were contacted by Ric a couple of days later. He was interested in their material, and they started discussing their future. An emplyee at Elektra Records had heard them as well and with his own label, “No.6 Records” Nada Surf released their first album, “Karmic”(1996). The 5 songs on the album didn’t sell all that good (?), despite the quality of the songs. The discussions with Ric also went good, and after signing a contract with “Elektra”, they produced the “High/Low” album with Ric Ocasek as producer that same year.

The controversy

“High/Low” became a major breakthrough, mostly because of their hit “Popular” reaching high on the charts. After producing the “Popular” video, they reached out all over the world through MTV (among other music TV channels). The high-school at which NAda Surf had recorded their video later on sued them and demanded that they withdrew the video because of a scene in a shower room where two footballers smiled at each other. The principal of the school saw this to be homosexual, and didn’t want the school to get a bad reputation.

After the breakthrough

After their breakthrough the obvious thing for the surfers was to start touring, which they did. They toured in both the USA and most of Europe. After that there was a long time of silence from the three guys. Rumours about their new album spread, and at first early ’98 was subject to release of their new album. This was however not correct, “The proximity effect” was released in Europe mid September and has yet to come out in North America.

Danko Jones

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Biography:Canadians Danko Jones draw most of their inspiration from ’70s hard rock, with elements of funk and punk rock thrown in for variety, and consist of eponymous vocalist/guitarist Danko Jones, bassist John “JC” Calabrese, and drummer Damon Richardson. Originally formed in Toronto, in 1996, they debuted a couple of years later with a loud, brash, self-titled EP, then followed it with a tentatively sleeker effort named My Love Is Bold in 1999. 2001 saw the release of I’m Alive and on Fire (A Collection of Songs: 1996-1999), after which a significantly re-energized and extra-electrified Danko Jones recorded and released 2002′s Born a Lion and its even more accomplished successor, We Sweat Blood. With the band’s debts to the swagger and mindset of ’70s hard rock gods AC/DC and Thin Lizzy now in full evidence, these albums received rave reviews (especially in Europe) and led to widespread touring outside of Canada. Finally, two years later, the U.S. caught up when Razor & Tie released a slightly modified version of We Sweat Blood for American audiences, following it with a new album Sleep Is the Enemy, in spring 2006.Discography:Danko Jones 1998My Love Is Bold 1999I’m Alive And On Fire 20o1Born A Lion 2002We Sweat Blood 2003Sleep Is The Enemy 2006 www.music.podshow.comwww.myspace.com/dankojoneswww.dankojones.com

Bob Mould

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

BiographyGuitarist/singer/songwriter Bob Mould was initially a member of Hüsker Dü, one of the most influential American bands of the ’80s. Hüsker Dü was a post-hardcore punk band that helped define the sound and ideals of alternative rock. After Hüsker Dü broke up, Mould signed a solo contract with Virgin Records in 1988. The following year, he released his first solo album, Workbook, which represented a major shift in sonic direction. .Frustrated with the business operations of major record labels, Mould left Virgin after the release of Black Sheets of Rain; they would later release a compilation of the two albums, Poison Years. Mould then formed an independent record company, SOL (Singles Only Label), which released 45s from new, developing bands as well as cult bands. In 1992, he formed a new trio, Sugar, with bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis; the band signed with Rykodisc in the U.S., Creation in the U.K. Sugar’s first album, Copper Blue, was released in the fall of 1992 to enthusiastic reviews and became Mould’s most successful project to date.Mould wrote the material for the second Sugar album during 1993. The band began recording in the spring of 1994, but the sessions ground to a halt and the tapes were erased. Mould decided to give the album one more try, and it was recorded quickly late that spring. The album, File Under: Easy Listening, appeared in the fall of 1994. Although it received good reviews and was moderately successful commercially, it didn’t match the performance of Copper Blue. In the spring of 1995, it was announced that Sugar was on hiatus. By the fall, Mould had broken up the band and begun to work on a third album entirely by himself. Mould played all of the instruments on his self-titled third album, which was released in the spring of 1996. The Last Dog and Pony Show followed in 1998.In 2002, after a long period of musical inactivity, Mould returned with the electronics-heavy Modulator, followed by the more conventional Body of Song in 2005. After a dance project with Richard Morel (Blowoff Project), Mould returned to his guitar roots and paired up with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty to record District Line in 2008.Discography:

Those Dancing Days

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Biography:Sweet as apple-pie pop, from Stockholm high school girls, led by a pounding Hammond organ. The five demo-tracks emulate some of the true twee pop greats such as Bis and Girlfrendo.”Those Dancing Days”, the northern soul inspired song which the band are named after, could easily fit onto the soundtrack of Austin Powers. “Hitten”, possibly the band’s signature tune is a fizzy pop number which will have you singing along instantly. If this band are not the next big thing I am willing to bet my life savings that one of the members of this group will feature on a Top Twenty selling Swedish album within the next five years. They are certainly worth investigating. I can hear a lot of influences in these four tracks ranging from girl bands to a bit of ska, from The Dolly Mixtures to The Pipettes. Hitten is far and away their best song based on those available and it is certainly one of the best songs, but then tasty Boy is cute and Disc-Hoe a lovely play on things.Discography:Singles:Those Dancing Days 2008Mallory Towers 2008www.music.podshow.comwww.myspace.com/thosedancingdayswww.thosedancingdays.com

Skid Row

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Biography:

Skid Row was one of the last hair metal bands to hit the mainstream before grunge took over in the early ’90s. They were also arguably the last of such bands to have any originality. While their 1989 self-titled release used standard pop-metal riffs and contained a handful of generic lyrics, 1991′s Slave to the Grind and 1995′s Subhuman Race broke away from the pop-metal mold with uncharacteristically hard, thrashy guitars and more unique songwriting while still relying on varying ’80s metal formulas. Though personal differences and changing trends would eventually tear the band apart by 1996, Skid Row showed a tremendous amount of promise during their short run in the mainstream.

Skid Row was formed in 1986 by bassist Rachel Bolan and former Bon Jovi guitarist Dave “the Snake” Sabo. The pair added guitarist Scotti Hill, drummer Rob Affuso, and vocalist Sebastian Bach to the lineup by early 1987 and the band spent the next year and a half playing a series of local clubs in the eastern U.S. Still in connection with Jon Bon Jovi, Sabo convinced the established rock star to land Skid Row a record deal with Mercury. In 1989, the band released their first album, Skid Row, which went multi-platinum on the strength of the Top 40 singles “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” Success was not without backlash, however — the band had naively signed away much of their royalties and Sebastian Bach’s childlike behavior would land the group in additional trouble. During the subsequent tour, Bach received harsh criticism for a T-shirt he publicly sported displaying the message: AIDS KILLS FAGS DEAD. Suits were also filed against Bach after a concert during the supporting tour, where the singer allegedly threw a glass bottle into the crowd, injuring a young female fan. Nonetheless, Skid Row retained a devoted audience — 1991′s Slave to the Grind debuted at number one on the Billboard Charts, an unprecedented accomplishment for a metal band. While the album did not chart any real radio hits, Grind received stronger critical praise and would eventually reach platinum status. Like so many of their peers, Skid Row lost much of their fan base during the grunge phase of the ’90s. As Nirvana stormed the scene in 1992, Skid Row took a hiatus, waiting out the grunge period and pondering breakups (ironically, Nirvana had once gone under the name Skid Row in the ’80s). Skid Row returned in 1995 with Subhuman Race, which surprisingly charted in the Top 40 but otherwise did not attract any real attention. During the supporting tour, tensions between the group members ran high and Skid Row disbanded shortly afterwards. Bach went on to form the Last Hard Men with Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, but the group broke up after recording a cover of Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” for the Scream soundtrack in 1996. Plans to record new songs for the Skid Row greatest hits album, 1998′s Forty Seasons, fell through, as Bach went on to form a solo project and portray the title role in the Broadway musical +Jeckyll and Hyde. In mid-2000, Skid Row reformed with new singer Johnny Solinger and toured as the opening band for KISS’ Farewell Tour.

Tom Keifer, of Cinderalla

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Biography:

Tom grew up in a musical family and began playing guitar at a young age. By the time he reached his teens, Tom discovered rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and Bad Company. Tom was interested to know what kind of music influenced these bands, so he did some research by finding and listening to old blues records by Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. Tom soon fell in love with the blues and was heavily influenced by this kind of music.

Tom joined his first rock band while in junior high school. He soon learned to play the electric guitar. The young musician struggled with drug and alcohol abuse during this time, and considered dropping out of school to pursue a music career. However, Tom’s mother Adrienne, bribed her son to stay in school by promising him a Gibson Les Paul guitar upon graduation.

Soon, Tom conquered his addictions, and began to focus on a career as a musician. He had started writing original material.

Cinderella was discovered by Jon Bon Jovi in 1985, at the Empire Rock Club in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. Jon has been quoted as saying “I saw Tommy Keifer onstage delivering some pretty nifty, growling vocals. Then he whipped out this Les Paul and proceeded to lay into some astounding sounds. This guy struck me as a star right then and there.”

Unfortunately, after the Heartbreak Station tour Tom lost his voice. He underwent several operations to no avail. Eventually it was determined that he had nodules on his vocal cords and paralysis of the left cord. To make matters worse, his mother died of cancer. By 1994, Cinderella had managed to released their fourth album, Still Climbing, which received little attention. The band broke up in 1995.

Keifer continued to have surgery to remove nodules on his vocal cords. Tom also battled depression. He was forced to learn how to sing again because of the paralysis of his left cord, but he eventually began working on material for a solo album. He and Emily divorced, and he settled in Nashville, Tennessee. Here, he continued to work on his solo album. The album was put on hold after Cinderella reunited in 1997 and toured in 1998

Today, Tom is married to songwriter Savannah Snow. They recently had their first child, a son named Jaidan.Tom and Cinderella recently completed their 20th anniversary tour with fellow rock veterans Poison, who were also celebrating 20 years in the business of both bands’ first albums.

Tom Keifer recently said that his solo album will be released shortly, and a new album from Cinderella is possible somewhere down the road, though not immediately.

Also Cinderella plans to tour in 2008. The bands have not been announced yet.

Twisted Sister

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Biography:

Formed in 1976, this New York, USA-based quintet’s original purpose was to provide the antidote to the disco music that was saturating the airwaves during the mid-70s. Featuring Dee

Snider (b. Daniel Snider, 15 March 1955, Massapequa, Long Island, New York, USA; vocals), Eddie Ojeda (guitar), Mark “The Animal” Mendoza (bass, ex-Dictators), Jay Jay French (guitar) and Tony Petri (drums) they had a bizarre image that borrowed ideas from Kiss, Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls. Musically they combined sexually provocative lyrics and dumb choruses with heavy-duty, metallic rock ‘n’ roll. A.J. Pero (ex-Cities) took over on drums before the recording of their debut, Under The Blade. This was picked up from the independent Secret label by Atlantic Records, following a successful UK appearance at the Reading Festival and a controversial performance on The Tube television show in 1982. The band never lived up to their initial promise, with successive albums simply regurgitating earlier ideas. Their greatest success was Stay Hungry, which cracked the Top 20 album charts on both sides of the Atlantic. It also included the hit single, “I Am, I’m Me”, which peaked at number 18 in the UK. Their audience had become bored with them by the time Come Out And Play was released and the tour to support it was a flop. Pero quit and returned to his former outfit, Cities; Joey “Seven” Franco (ex-Good Rats) was drafted in as replacement. Snider steered the band in a more melodic direction on Love Is For Suckers. The album was still born; Atlantic terminated their contract, and the band imploded in 1987.

Snider went on to form Desperado, with ex-Gillan guitarist Bernie Torm(subsequently evolving, more permanently, into Widowmaker), before finding belated success as a heavy metal DJ. Twisted Sister briefly reunited to record a new song for the 1998 movie Strangeland, which was written by and starred Snider. Looking back on his days dressing up with his old band, Snider would conclude: “All that flash and shit wears thin. There’s gotta be something beyond it. And there wasn’t with Twisted Sister”. Nevertheless, he continues to play with the band on an occasional basis
