Bad Brains

Biography:

Bad Brains are an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1977. They are widely regarded as being among the pioneers of hardcore punk.[1][2][3], though the band’s members objected to the term “hardcore” to describe their music.[4]

Originally formed as a jazz fusion ensemble under the name Mind Power, Bad Brains developed a very fast and intense punk rock sound, which was both musically complex, and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. They were also an adept reggae band, in a sort of Jekyll-and-Hyde arrangement, while later recordings featured elements of funk and heavy metal. Bad Brains are also notable as religious followers of the Rastafari movement.

Bad Brains broke up and reformed several times over the years, sometimes with different singers and/or drummers. The band’s classic and current lineup is singer H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson.

Bad Brains were ranked #99 on VH1′s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Though the official name of the band is Bad Brains, they are often referred to as the Bad Brains, sometimes even by the band members themselves. The Beastie Boys were huge Bad Brains fans, and they intentionally selected a name with the initials B.B. because of this.

NOFX

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Biography:

Since the band’s formation in the early ’80s, NOFX has been a testament to the potential of a punk band on an independent label to enjoy popularity and success. In the ’80s, the band released a handful of EPs an album on Mystic Records, before finding a home on Epitaph Records.

Epitaph is where the band saw its biggest commercial success in 1994, when their album Punk in Drublic went gold. Unlike other bands that were also seeing success at the time, NOFX didn’t head to a major label. Sticking to their ideals, they remained with Epitaph until 2000, when they left Epitaph for Fat Mike’s own label, Fat Wreck Chords.

During the band’s career, they have made a point to avoid all areas of mass media, fostering a relationship that is nonexistent rather than bad. They conduct very few interviews, and while they have made a few videos, they have not given permission for them to be played on mainstream channels like MTV or VH1. As a whole, they tend to attempt to promote themselves in the way of any other underground punk band, rather than to exploit the opportunities that could be available to them – opportunities that would render them contradictions of themselves.

In addition to the blatantly political nature of the band’s lyrics, Fat Mike is also politically active. His label has now released two Rock Against Bush compilations, and he also launched Punk Voter, a collection of punk labels, bands and fans that seeks to educate and inform America’s youth and get them to vote. Specifically, their goal at one time was to vote George W Bush out of office, but even after his reelection, Punk Voter is still actively educating youg voters about issues that affect them.

The Vitamins

Welcome to The Vitamins. Starting out in Kilburn Rebecca (vocals), inspired by a mix of punk meets ‘60’s blues artists such as Etta James and Irma Thomas, began writing in her home studio with Daniel (drums) producing the demos. Then began rehearsals with Louis (guitar) and Keith (bass) which gave them the impetus to play gigs in their local area. They then stumbled upon Red Flag and we stumbled upon them, and deciding that there were not enough women in rock a blossoming partnership was formed. The result is this amazing debut, ‘Fire’, which is a dramatic intro to the band, part blues part rock. It is basic, strong and very resonant and it tells it how it is. The rest, as they say, is history in the making!
