Now Staten Island may not be enormously noted for it’s indie rock output, but these guys could be about to set that balance right. Coming on like a post rock Pavement, the minute their ep, …..’and The Hazy Sea’ hit our desks we were just gagging to check them out live. All on your behalf of course.

As you’ll see from this week’s episode of Flyposter, we were not disappointed. So much energy, a masterful use of the loud/soft dynamic and a great line in obscure musical references, these guys were one of our favourite ever interviewees, their soundcheck was awesome and the gig on the night ROCKED. Go find out for yourself – if Pitchfork are saying they’re one of the best new bands of 2009, we second that!

…finally, we got the extra special Bronx footage from their tour, and the interview with all the specially filmed tour bits is now live on the Flyposter site! So you can catch me, Joby and Matt backstage before their Shred Yr Face Tour going over some old ground and coming up with some new song titles for their side project. Sex Shrapnel is mine btw, but the guys are allowed use it as they rule. We also go over tour games, their role as Black Flag, The Germs and sleeping. Oh, and watch out for the ball bag, it made the cut!

The Century of Self may well mark …Trail of Dead’s return to the form we witnessed on their early albums, but Jason and Conrad had plenty to say about their Interscope years when we caught up with them before their recent London dates. I hadn’t sen the chaps for a good few years (not since they were road buddies by way of Snow Patrol and The Reindeer Section. For real) yet they were still as cranked, funny, and downright intense as they ever were. Even if Jason had developed a penchant for random snowglobes in the interim. We shot the breeze about times gone by, working with Yeah Yeah Yeah’s producer Chris Coady, ballpoint pen art (Conrad did the sleeve art ENTIRELY in ballpoint pen), live shows, kit swapping and festival plans. Plus some rather stoopid shit involving Jason’s big brass balls.

Then some crazy cool dude who loved all music offered to get involved in our filming, so we’ve got an extra special bit of live footage from the tremendous gig that followed our chat. All in all, a very special episode of Flyposter, coming soon…

We toddled along to see them on the recent Shred Yr Face tour, where they shared some stage air with Rolo Tomassi and Fucked Up. Joby and Matt were on fine form, and the gig did indeed, Shred Our Faces and ears. They’re quite simply one of the best live bands around and never fail to bring you to your knees. The episode is going to be a bit special, as we sent a camera out on the road with them and they’ve delivered some very special bits. Although we won’t be using the ECU of Matt’s scrotum… In the interview they were full of great suggestions for things you can do in 33 minutes, which just so happens to be how long their new album Bronx III is. Eh, d’you see what we did there???

Well, as luck would have it, it was the NME awards this week, for which rubber trousers (or more accurately ‘treggings’) were donned, hair tamed and minor indie bands coralled into a pen in order to witness the mighty mighty Cure play a special hits set. I cried like a baby, partly due to Robert Smith’s presence, partly due to the fact somebody stole my booze during their set. How callous! We also got to observe the reformation of Blur and the triumphant taking of the room by Elbow. As to how I managed to get my ribs crushed by a major pop starlet is another blog entirely…suffice to say, drinks of apology were exchanged and I’ll not be pursuing her people over my injuries…

so, prior to heading off to do that we met two great new artists/bands. Firstly, the folk song troubadour James Yuill sang us a lovelysong and talked us through the intricacies of using the web to promote your music, amongst other things. he’s a bit of a pioneer is our James. Then we belted over town to Camden and caught up with ace Glasgow rock and rollers Dananackroyd. They told us heaps about canadian actor Dan Ackroyd and invited us to film their new single in soundcheck, which we did. it was ace. hahhahahaha, sounds like a what I did on my holidays post now doesn’t it. Well, all this and more on its way form Flyposter…..

Suffice to say it’s been a busy month, and aside from the current episode featuring indie troubadours Starsailor and Iggy -as -you-like ex DFA 1979′er, Sebastien Grainger, in the coming weeks you can expect to hear from plenty of great up and coming bands, who will definitely be going on to bother the mainstream in the future.

So, in no particular order, get ready to hear from Cherbourg, coming on all Midlake jamming with Belle & Sebastian on Band of Horse’s porch…prepare to be charmed and consumed by the throb and swell of The Invisible – like Hot Chip jamming with ESG in Eno’s basement….be reeled in and dampened down by the sub Velvets sound of Crystal Stilts….witness angular, sharp UK pop at its finest from The Rakes….be infectiously jiggled by the insistent sound of the incredibly young yet very wise Flashguns….then hop over and be seduced by the aching vocals and spacey production of Stricken City before having a blow out to the sound of ex Muslims, now The Soft Pack and their intelligent rock and roll…..

hahahahaha. They will actually kill me for that if they see it. But that’s unlikely as Jonathan, Grasshopper and Jeff are far too busy promoting their excellent new album Snowflake Midnight and its sister release Strange Attractor. We hooked up with them, sadly in the downstairs room of a hotel and not in the back of their tour bus yomping across the wastes of upstate New York, but you can’t have it all. Or in my case, anything. Suffice to say we were in garrulous spirits, which resulted in us all failing to conform to the perception that the Rev are miserable, glum, intense musicians and instead resulting in a rather strange but highly amusing conversation taking in a world petting zoo tour, the contractual obligations of their album artwork bunny rabbit, and, er, Jonathan’s lack of glumness. Dammit guys – why d’you have to be so funny and so talented? I feel small.

Keep your eyes peeled for the interview in the next episode of Flyposter. Not a dry seat in the house……
